If not for this I would give the book 5 stars. He is nothing more than a half-ignorant fool, a disavowed Jew, a malamhd man. The cases used in this book not only mimic the misandry of US politicians but groups like the Black Hundreds can only be seen as a comparison to the KKK. Officials eager for an excuse to start a pogrom, jail the innocent Bok for two years without trial.

Worth reading, but a super downer. A couple of weeks back I went hunting for a new novel. It mmalamud me at that time as a powerful and even important work.

However when Yakov reaches Kiev, he has difficulty making a living, there are just no jobs for Jews. This book breaks my heart and makes me feel for the protagonist, Yakov Bok, a Jewish fixer by trade, who dreamed to make something of himself by moving to Kiev after ma,amud was ratted out on by his wife Raisl.
It is steeped in Spinoza’s philosophy, existentialism, politics, and religion. For Bok, a Jew by birth but self proclaimed non-religious freethinker, suffering is the enlightenment. Set in Kiev in during a period of heightened anti-Semitism, the novel tells the story of Yakov Bok, a Jewish handyman blamed for the brutal murder of a young Russian boy. It’s as if a man flies over his malamuud head on the wings of reason, or some such thing. Any text you add should be original, not copied from other sources.
The Fixer isn’t interested in doing that. Today, I want my piece of bread, not in Paradise. When a twelve year old Christian boy is “ritually” murdered not far from the factory, a worker who Bok had previously caught thieving fixed who suspects that fixsr is Jewish raises suspicions about him with the Police.
