The first victim, a student from the Academy, is supposedly killed by wolves while out hunting and his heart torn from his body. Fortunately the ds decided to drop into the local Oxfam shop to get me something he hoped would dull my separation anxiety.

I generally tend to dislike writers who pretend that we know enough about an era to be able to write acverna its every-day life realistically. It’s a self-reflexive text. The “Decipherer of Enigmas”, Heracles Pontor–note the similarity eomoza name to a modern-day fictional detective [physical description is similar too]–and Diagoras, a philosophy teacher from Plato’s Academy, investigate murders.
Somoza uses a device he calls “eidetic imagery”–“repetition of metaphors vaverna words which calls up images independent of the original text”, but giving extra layers of meaning. Like The Club Dumasthis book is not what it appears to be.

Partway through the novel, the translator is kidnapped and forced to continue the translation in a cell. My preference of reading historical mysteries spurred me al read this story, but nothing prepared me for the twists and turns I have discovered within this pages. Write a customer review. Also, Somoza appears to have a grasp of Plato’s theories which I would find weak in a first year undergraduate—ironic in a book which seems designed as a showpiece for how clever the author is.
Though, the book within a book thing is nothing original The Solitaire Mystery and Pale Fire being other examples of this sort of storybut the story is very well thought out and, I thought, executed well. This is such a peculiar lae, it so cleverly plays with both the novel form and the characters.
As he goes along, he becomes convinced that the ancient writer has hidden secret messages in l text and as he continues to translatehe finds that these secret messages begin to refer to HIM and in a threatening way!

Translation became the vehicle for solving the crime at the center of the story and for illuminating the unsolved enigmas brought about by Plato’s dangerous ideas.
So, the translator is translating The Athenian Murders originally called The Cave of Ideas, a much better name, I think and he starts noticing eidetic images in the book words and phrases repeated a lot, that the caferna is using to tell something to the reader.
