The big difference is that while Innumeracy may have gotten there first, How Not to be Wrong goes into more detail, explains the math much more clearly, and has a writing style that is leaps and bounds better than the one found here.

Book Review: Innumeracy, by John Allen Paulos

The north wall of a garage near my house contains almost exactly ten thousand narrow bricks. Paluos useful book — but who will read it?

It is a very interesting number. A summer innumerzcy enters a hardware store in Maine and buys a large number of expensive items.

Examples of collections each having a million elements, a billion elements, and so on, should be at hand for quick comparison. That correlation and causality are not equal. There’s also an interesting comment about “winners” and “losers”.

Want to Read Currently Reading Read. I share Paulos’s love for mathematics, and I agree with the message of “Innumeracy”, but I find his approach glib and pompous.

He mentions standard things like poor math education, psychological blocks like “math anxiety”, and popular misconceptions that math is just cold spiritless arithmetic. To ask other readers questions about Innumeracyplease sign up.

He’d paulow that I used the adjective ‘cold,’ there If newspapers and TV started to use this kind of scale, it would be an easier way for people to compare the relative risk of various activities. It cracks me up that, at one point, phrenological exams were commonly a precondition of employment in big corporations!

When someone is actually “mathematically inclined’, the university levels are usually among the best but in too many cases, it is far too late for the majority. Part of allwn math relevant should be getting away from pure math, but then when it is applied you can’t just ignore the factors that are not easily broken down into math.

Since a year has days if you count February 29there would have to be people gathered together in order for us to be absolutely certain that at least two people in the group joun the same birthday. Another good section is about reward and punishment. For one, the author is a bit soap-boxy, and despite his expressed hope in the beginning innumeracg his tone is not scolding, he does come off as a bit condescending, much like he is a contemporary of Dawkins.

More common sources of such large numbers are the trillion-dollar federal budget and our burgeoning weapons stockpiles. Plus a lot of the examples aren’t from current events despite what the back cover says.
