This was recommended to me by a friend of mine, Chicago bizarro author David David Katzman, specifically because of the growing influence it’s apparently having these days on all lovers of the surreal; because for those who don’t know, Fernando Pessoa was sort of the Portuguese version of Franz Kafka, a white-collar worker in Lisbon during the Early Modernist desasosiegoo of the s through ’30s, who barely published anything during his own lifetime but left behind over 25, pages of pesaoa obtuse work after his death.
I tend fernndo stick with books that is more focused on story and characters than the writing. Not even the most desperate dissertation could convince me such a place is discernable. He provides us with some brilliant and awe-inspiring insights which force the reader to stop reading and ponder for a while.

The more a man differs from me, the edsasosiego real he seems, for he depends that much less on my subjectivity. The editors have assembled the fragments in a thematic way, even though the same themes appear multiple times in the finished text. What I realise is that I much prefer the concept of Pessoa, and his ideas and his life, to the reality of actually reading his works. Better then to put a stop to all our desires and hopes, to our futile attempts to explain the world, or to any foolish ambitions to change or govern it.

That would be worse than this. At times I was 3-starring this, especially toward the end, because it got to be a drag reading about all this “life is a dream” and “tedium again” and “death is better than life, only then I wouldn’t be able to bemoan life, which is my bread and butter” stuff.
