I would happily only ever read Co I’m a little conflicted over my reaction to this novel. Nobody is exempt, not even his seemingly straitlaced parents or Coupland himself, as readers will see. Or maybe jPod is an all-around shou I don’t know what anyone expects from Douglas Coupland these days, much less what I expect from the man.
Ugh, that second one is kind of obnoxious but probably true. The trouble with writing something so zeitgeisty is that within 10 years your books is going to be very, very dated. It’s hilarious, thoughtful and introspective from time to time, more often absurd. It’s not a bad trope, but it’s still a trope Garden Stateanyone?
When JPod was first published init sounded interesting and I thought about buying it but it was in hardback and really expensive so instead I checked Microserfs and Girlfriend in a Coma out of the library.
Admittedly some of them are pretty close to the mark.

Their insufferable, cloying boss insists they add a ‘charismatic turtle character’ to it, which everyone recognises as both humiliating and pointless. On one hand, as a computer programmer, I loved that part of the story.
The same can be said for Coupland’s Jpod. This Google -version of Douglas Coupland consistently bumps into Ethan and manages to weave himself into the narrator’s life.
Hanged himself from the side of his posh midtown Manhattan terrarium. As big a fan jood I am of his, it’s admittedly hard to justify this particular stretch of his career, so best perhaps to turn either to the books older than these or newer to save yourself some wasted reading experiences.
Still 4-stars, solely on the basis of well developed characters and first rate geek humor. Ethan Jarlewski and five co-workers whose surnames begin with “J” are bureaucratically marooned coipland jPod, a no-escape architectural limbo on the fringes of a massive Vancouver game design company.
You might like it a lot more than I did. Page after page is filled with giant type, mere collections of symbols and Microsoft wingding characters, padding out what in fact is a novelette, if that. Whatever the reason, there is an unpalatable feeling of an artist angrily returning to his rut. The main character is the son of a mother who kills a biker and buries doulas body in her basement; later, with his mother, he holds up and robs another group of bikers.

As I’ve detailed here before, I have for most of my adult jopd been an obsessive fan of “Generation X” phrase-coiner Douglas Coupland; but while I read literally everything from his first book up to Miss Wyoming couplland younger, mostly for personal reasons, and have read literally everything from The Gum Douglxs Reprinted from the Chicago Center for Literature and Photography [cclapcenter.

Thanks for telling us about the problem. Without spoiling, let’s just say something important happens towards the end involving digging a hole and a safe deposit box key, and no explanation is given as to why the key is needed. Next item on the agenda: According to page numbering, I am exactly half way through, and decided that I’ve given it enough time So what if the main character’s Mom is growing and selling weed, Dad is dating his son’s classmates, and his boss is being manipulated by a billionaire Asian criminal?
This book started off pretty strong, but became disappointing after maybe pages, and never picked up from there. It may be time to wash my hands of his work completely. Ethan’s pot-growing, lover-shooting Mom. My usual enjoyment of a book lies in how much I miss it after the final page. Like Bret Easton Ellis except not as funny, Chuck Palahniuk but not as visceral and, of course, let us not forget, an ending that only Christopher Pike could have ghost written.
In the second half of the book, Ethan becomes involved in the purchase of a property known as Lot My library Help Advanced Book Search. They prefer to sit around, as Douglas Coupland characters do, wittily reflecting on the minutiae of modern life. The marketing manager, Steven Lefkowitz, mandates the turtle’s addition to the game because he is trying to please his son during a custody battle.
Do we really need 40 or so pages of pi so we can look for the l that he substituted for a 1? From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Feels undeniably like a step backwards.
