Well to me at least.

Carver’s characters are all human beings but the mood is always bleak as hablaos the his characters do not know how to laugh and see the good side of things. Raymond Carver was a master. I’m guessing what they’re getting at is Carver’s ability to keep all the mechanics of his stories imperceptible beneath the dee, with maybe a few out-of-character exceptions the alcohol device in the title carveg being one. On a quick reading this might not seem like much. Today, not so much. This material got into my bones. I don’t have any experience with minimalism, so I’m not sure what the actual purpose of it is. At times the depth seems steeped.

Often matters are exacerbated by problems with drink and fidelity. Still, I understand why this is a part of the literary canon, especially the “wannabe-writers-must-read-these-Real-Writers-in-order-to-Truly-Understand-Literature” one. There were moments when I thought wow, that’s great, poetic, but it was hablanos a few of those moments.

And that’s probably what will make these stories linger in my memory. Short stories that are celebrations for next to nothing. I find it very enchanting cause I usually dislike writings with no definite ending and too mundane that very hard to find a pleasure on reading it, but reading Carver I somehow accepting the fact that my imagination would decide on the next end paragraph.

While I was able to race through these micro stories in less time than it would take me to duck from combat gunfire, providing some of the same sheer joy and terror, they didn’t cast the same spell they would’ve had I discovered Raymond Carver in high school.

Maybe he just felt guilty about something or was afraid to be alone or Finishing this review, my sentiments exactly. It should be easy math. When I finished reading it, I was both impressed at Carver’s brisk dialogue and wishing there had been more.

And yes, it is obvious that Murakami even got his inspiration from Carver’s title when he came up with his non-fiction book: I do, however, thoroughly like “slice of life” stories. And yet they ARE definitive and terse, sharp and pointed as an arrow. I love it in a way that means I’ll never be able to forget it or get rid of this book to make room on my shelves.
