So that’s the background. I will admit I never had no desire to read them and dismissed the series as typical epic fantasy.

The Deryni world is influenced by 10th, 11th, and 12th England, Scotland, and Wales and the story takes place in the kingdom of Gwynedd.

The Legends of Camber of Culdi are intriguing for their setting: On further reflection maybe that is by design.

I loved Katherine Kurtz’ Deryni books when I first read them back in the seventies. I expected much more from a book about such a controversial Saint figure in Deryni history – I couldn’t give you more than two words to describe his personality, let alone any of the other characters.

Racked with grief and self-loathing, Imre seeks comfort in the arms of his sister, Princess Ariellaand soon begins an incestuous relationship with her. I also found this novel entirely plot-driven, the characters barely fleshed out at all. In this day of camger media, AR, and VR, it’s easy to see what happens when people are allowed to mess with the minds of others.

Pf think the Camber books and the Heirs of Camber books are some of Katherine’s strongest work. Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. Kurtz developed so fully. Instead, it is a heavily political story about dynastic succession, with religious trappings and a hint of magic here and there for flavor.

This one is hard to put down, and will be an emotional roller coaster ride. This is what I would consider a classic fantasy story. Camber MacRorie, himself a Deryni and one of the old king’s favorites, and who has withdrawn to his estate in disgust at Imre’s actions, becomes aware that the last Haldane king the human dynasty may, in fact, have a legitimate heir although, just to complicate things, that heir took vows and has been living in a monastery for pretty much his entire adult life and so may not be in fit shape to lead an open rebellion This does not happen.
